thought for the day: from vancouver, canada

graffiti can be profound at the best of times but in vancouver, street artists evidently opt for pumping out philosophical viewpoints as opposed to tagging public property with their namesake identities. here, a classic from vancouver that i spotted just 48 hours ago, minutes after collecting my US work visa for the next 5 years. YES!

rip zinger

all hail rip zinger! this 32 year old living legend was the official tour guide in tokyo last week so i owe him bigtime for showing me some extremely special spots situated within the japanese capital, including one of the coolest macro-biotic restaurants with photographs of stevie wonder on the walls. rip's real name is tomonori tanaka, but ever since he was a kid everyone would call him rip because he would always wear 'rip city' t-shirts, after the famed skate shop in santa monica. he swears by anything and everything in life, but most of all, he's known for his love of skateboarding. he cites it to be his religion forevermore. rip zinger: respect...and origato!

cyril

i'm a firm believer in stating that cyril here is from another epoque. his past lives listing must surely be extensive and i can remember thinking the exact same thing close to five years ago when i first met the funny french man in tokyo as he was working on a colette meets comme des garcons project. today, in addition to existing as an artist himself, he operates as an asset to 'le baron' - the hottest club in tokyo - coming up with creative ventures and entertaining options for patrons, to say the least. expect to see more of him on this blog in the very near future...

loveless employee #2

shiny shoes, a bowl cut, a blue goyard bag and this little lady is stylin'!

missla

missla has called tokyo home for nearly a decade now, and after years of corresponding with her via our superfuture.com links (missla takes care of tokyo, i take care of paris) we finally managed to meet, even if it was just for a few minutes.

keiko

check this out: i met keiko in tokyo last week as a friend introduced me to her at the comme des garcons boutique. she has worked with the company for 31 years, ever since the beginning. keiko is down with fidelity y'all! she was really nervous about getting her picture taken insisting that she looked awful. in the end she came around though, after calling CDG headquarters to check that it was ok to be photographed. i particularly like her turquoise ring and the way in which she's working it against the black trench coat. keiko knows where its at.

the three year-old itch

quite simply, there needs to be a picture of this kid's face next to the word "visionaire" in the dictionary. period.

loveless employee #1

loveless is a mega-hip shopping destination in tokyo where the sales staff provide just as much intrigue as the products merchandised within the store itself. check out our little friend here, who obligingly said yes for a photo and then sprung this spontaneous model pose at the last second. what a natural!

yellow

because here in tokyo, yellow tights are what's up...

special edition: 100th posting

umbrella's are the new canes. well, in tokyo they are anyway...
on this, my 100th posting, i'd like to send a big-up thanks to everyone who has supported this blog since day one (that's july for anyone who has just logged on for the first time).

white shoes

purple pants, an orange perm, a striped cardigan, white shoes and a gainsbourg-meets-60's-hippy-trip vibe. only in shibuya on a tuesday afternoon.

cindy

today i met cindy crawford who turned up to a stella mccartney party with a python-skin gucci bag and leather high heels. which is fair enough i suppose but fifty bucks says she had the option to be dressed by stella - who is notorious for not using leather or any other such animal materials. so i reserve the right to describe cindy as utterly daft for clasping to a dead snake, fronting like that on animal-friendly turf.

LA vs PARIS: the striped top

maya in los angeles VS ileana in paris.
spotting the parallel's between stylish young women sporting striped tops and bold bags in both cities respectively is what's up.

DELINLEE DELOVELY in i-d magazine

a big-up thanks to i-d for including me in a special blog article featured this month (october issue). they feature 10 images (diane, pictured below represents DELINLEE DELOVELY) from the leading fashion blogs on the web, and even accompany it with an article elaborating on background info for 9 of the 10 blogs. the one blog they forgot to write anything about was - yup, you guessed it, mine. real nice.
in other news, i'm heading to tokyo next week for some harajuku freshness so get set for some japanese street style in full effect, starting tuesday.

bleached brows?

i'm totally on the fence when it comes to bleaching your eyebrows. essentially, its different strokes for different folks. what works for some, doesn't necessarily work for others. whether or not blondies are bleached in these shots below, i cannot say. but what i can say about this, is that for me, once you push aside all of the nicole richie/lindsay lohan clones here in los angeles, this is the quintessential example of a young woman in california and the way she dresses. simple, safe, sun-savvy and always seconds away from laughter.

doris

every now and again you come across someone who not only inspires you, they reinforce your belief in terms of what it means to be a success today. for me, doris is the complete package. she's the founder of a vintage store which i mention regularly on this blog named "the way we wore." you could call her a walking encyclopedia of style who rises to the challenge of broadening boundaries and pushing envelopes. not content with knowing her stuff and sharing it with the world to see, doris dares to dream. a native of san francisco, today, she calls los angeles home. and isn't that a blessing for newcomers like myself. respect!

roman

here's a shot taken last night at the margiela store opening of roman alonso who is one of the founders of greybull press. i first met him in paris about a month prior to moving to los angeles and i can remember him predicting "you'll love it!" of the move, and sure enough, he was right. i would love to see one of my favorite artists, reas aka todd james, illustrate a personnage of roman. maybe one day...

most wanted: sneaker freaker

this is interesting because i spotted this guy at the rose bowl flea markets last month just after he'd picked up the pair of trainers hanging from his shoulder. i have since shown this picture to a couple of guys, all of whom have suffered from a mild fit of jealousy and envy rolled into one. the trainers just so happen to be super-rare and were once made famous back in the 80's thanks to andre agassi. ace that one!

sarah aka silver belle

this here is a special shout-out to a very funny friend of mine whose name is sarah, and right now i'm willing to bet you fifty bucks she has around 10,000 emails waiting to be answered as she prepares to embark upon the whirlwind tour of fashion weeks across the globe. stay hydrated sarah - sending you lots of energetic vibes!!!

brown-eyed beauty

is it the headband with the chestnut curls? or the red lips with the big brown eyes and russ meyer-type physique? or could it be the white shoes and logo bag combo? who knows. one thing is sure though: this little lady belongs in a noir 50's cult film with a veronica lake-like wardrobe.

sia

once upon a time in a small town named adelaide in south australia two ladies used to cross one another from time to time along a busy strip named rundle street. fast forward 15 years and today they both call los angeles home. one of them writes and photographs this blog. the other sings, goes by the name sia and knows how to work a backpack and beige ray bans. respect.
