i think i've seen the 1960 cult-classic "a bout de souffle" about 50 times and its true to say it gets better with each screening, an acquired taste of sorts. last night in beverly hills i took my 86 year-old, former academy award nominated neighbor to see the restored 35mm print and let me tell you, happiness was defined for me seeing the look on this woman's face as the credits had finished rolling, witnessing her complete adoration for this film seeing it for the very first time. from one generation to the next, roles reversed in effect: she teaches me about old hollywood, i teach her about french new wave. that's happiness right there folks.
